Ilkal sarees originated in the 8th century AD in the town of Ilkal in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. Known for their distinctive weaving technique using cotton for the body and silk for the border/pallu, they were historically supported by local chieftains and are a staple of North Karnataka.

 These sarees have a 1,000+ year history, with designs evolving through royal patronage and the use of natural fibres. They are known for using a technique where the body is joined to the pallu (called topu), often featuring a distinctive red border.
