Ikkat (or Ikat) is an ancient, intricate tie-dye weaving technique with global roots, appearing in India as early as the 7th century, famously depicted in Ajanta cave paintings. Originating from the Malay-Indonesian word "mangikat" (to tie), it involves dyeing threads before weaving to create distinctive, slightly blurred geometric patterns.

 Historically worn by royalty and nobility, Ikat was associated with high social status and ritualistic ceremonies.

Today, Ikkat sarees are popular for their "living narrative" designs, representing local culture and traditional weaving skills passed down through generations.
